A Legacy of Fair Fun: Wanell Costello Announces Her Retirement

In 1989, Wanell Costello walked onto the Arizona State Fairgrounds as an intern. Thirty-seven years later, she is retiring as the Executive Director, leaving behind a career defined by growth and community.

Wanell’s journey saw her rise through various departments before she was named Executive Director in 2015. Over the decades, she witnessed history from the front row, citing legendary performances at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum – from the Phoenix Suns to icons like KISS, George Strait, and Faith Hill – as some of her fondest memories.

As Executive Director, she diversified revenue by expanding interim events and transforming the Coliseum into a rehearsal space for many touring artists. Wanell credits her predecessors for much of her success, noting, “I’ve been lucky in my career. I had supervisors and leaders who allowed me to try new things. Each year I was given a new challenge. It never got dull. It still hasn’t.” Wanell’s willingness to take risks throughout her time at the Fair has helped the institution stay relevant within the ever-changing Fair landscape.

As she prepares to swap the Fairgrounds for world traveling, the entire Arizona Exposition and State Fair team wishes her a fond farewell. Thank you, Wanell, for 37 foundational years of dedication.
