Are you a weekend warrior of a different type? Do you like the thrill of competition and the pride that comes with winning? If so, the 2009 Arizona State Fairgrounds is your arena.

Just ask Vicki Vasquez and her daughter, Jessica. Between the two of them they have been entering the Fair's culinary competitions for more than two decades and are the proud winners of dozens of blue ribbons. "Everyone should put their talents to the test," states Vicki, "People don't realize how easy, fun and inexpensive it is to enter the Fair's competitions." After years of winning ribbons and even a national title for their Orange Pecan Yeast Rolls, Vicki and Jessica admit they still have more to learn. They look forward to the annual Arizona State Fair so they can improve their skills and catch up with friends they meet each year in the culinary competition.

Don't let these two intimidate you. Anyone can compete in the Fair, all ages and skill levels are welcome. From age 4 to 104, beginners to seasoned pros can showcase their talents in a variety of areas and vie for the coveted state-awarded blue ribbon. Entry categories include 4-H, smallstock and livestock; agriculture; creative crafts & collections; various culinary arts (including canned goods and beer & wine); fine arts; floriculture; mineral & jewelry; photography; and student art & technology.

The Exhibitor Handbook explains all the requirements for entry and serves as a resource for closing dates, receiving dates, judging dates and release for the entries. Exhibitor Handbooks can be found online at: http://www.azstatefair.com/exhibitors/exhibitors.aspx. Exhibitors without computer access can request assistance by contacting the Fair Entries department at 602-252-6771.

New this year, exhibitors may enter their Competitive Entries (non-livestock), such as quilts, culinary concoctions, or crafty creations, ONLINE. This simplifies the registration process greatly, reduces paperwork (is more environmentally friendly) and allows exhibitors to pay their registration fees online with a credit card. It really is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

In addition, the Arizona State Fair is offering Competitive Entry exhibitors the opportunity to purchase up to 4 discounted admission tickets at half off the regular price. Tickets must be purchased on-line by September 29 in order to receive the discount and are good on admission of all age groups. They can also be ordered by mail and all orders must be submitted with a paid entry form.

Your quest for a blue ribbon requires time, talent, tenacity and of course, exhibition at the Fair. It's time for you to show off and shine at the Arizona State Fair. After all, you just may garner the bragging rights of having an award winning talent. Act soon — Deadlines for entry in several categories begin September 15.
